Dark Knight Rises Filming – Pittsburgh, August 2011

Dark Knight Rises Set Pass

This was my set pass for the Dark Knight Rises filming

Last weekend I got to go with my husband @VenPixel and our friendĀ @emilyschooley down to Pittsburgh to be an extra in The Dark Knight Rises. It was a really amazing experience, and I felt very lucky to get to be part of it. That said, it was also an extremely hot and sunny day, and not really fun to get through! Big thanks to Emi for driving us down, it was great to spend the weekend together. And also thanks to @VenPixel for helping make this happen, you’re a great partner in crime :)

I wanted to write out what the day was like, both to share the experience and so I’ll remember it, but be warned – there are movie spoilers within! Also, sorry the photos aren’t the best quality – nobody was supposed to take pics anyways, so we’re lucky to have them and thanks again to the very nice guy who provided them! Click to enlarge, as always.

Jim Gordon is Alone

Oh Jim Gordon, I love you so much. You’re like the whole Bat-verse’s father, and despite having been through so much in your time keeping Gotham safe, you still believe in the goodness of people, and in Batman.

Somehow, that makes it so much funnier when poor Jim is in the middle of a conversation and suddenly he’s all alone. It’s become a running gag in Batman (remember in Dark Knight? “… He does that.”) and the comics don’t disappoint.

This page is from Superman/Batman 85, which came out this week. Written by Joshua Hale Fialkov, drawn by Adriana Melo and JP Mayer, it’s Superman’s turn to mess with Jim:

Oh Jim. So alone. The other time this happened recently was in Batman & Robin 20, from April 2011. It’s written by Peter Tomasi, drawn by Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray:

Dick and Damian are doing it now too! I love Gordon’s response, he’s not upset – instead, it seems to be just how things should be.

I know there was another one recently, where Gordon said “Now he’s teaching them to do it.” I feel like it was in Detective Comics, but I can’t find it! Anyone know what book it was in?

Keeping Secrets

Was talking with a good friend last night about Batman comics, as we so often do, especially re the ending of Batman & Robin 16. I realized something that’s been bugging me about it — now it seems even more likely that people will figure out The Secret. I mean, if Vicki Vale can put it together on her own (though, granted, investigative journalism is her job), won’t people clue in now that Bruce admits there’s a connection? It just seems like an unneccessary risk. That said, Batman always has a plan, and I should trust him :)

Return of Bruce Wayne 6 comes out today! I’m super-excited, are you? I’m thinking tonight and tomorrow night I’ll re-read the whole series, and try to have some thoughts to share by Friday. I’m really hoping there’s some sort of big reunion scene, bringing closure to the whole thing with bat-hugs and Alfred’s hot chocolate. Will we get it? What do you want to see happen?

I am the night.

Where does he get those wonderful toys?

Welcome, Bat-Fans! This is the inaugural entry in my new Batman Comics review blog, and I thought I’d start by telling you a little bit about who I am and why I’m doing this before jumping into the comicbook discussion.

So, hi! Call me Spice. You might remember me from other websites such as Twitter, LiveJournal, and Reddit. I’m a Canadian woman working in the tech industry, and I’ve been a big fan of Batman my whole life. The 60′s Batman show was an after-school staple for years, and Christian Bale’s recent performances as Batman really rejuvenated my interest in the whole Batverse. Heath Ledger’s amazing Joker was the icing on the bat-cake, a performance that part of me will just never get over. In March 2010 I started following several weekly Batman titles in preparation for the Return of Bruce Wayne mini-series, and it turned out to be even more fun and engaging than I expected! The artwork is beautiful, the stories are exciting and meaningful, the characters are fascinating, and Bruce Wayne lives on! What more could a girl want?

Well, it turns out, I want someone to talk with about all this! Some place where I can exclaim over beautiful and innovative artwork, theorize about plot points, and complain about those few times when I dislike or disagree with what I’m reading. My partner in crime listens when I get excited, but he’s not really a regular comicbook reader. So here we are! I’ll write about comicbooks and perhaps some other Batverse stuff, and I hope you take the time to comment with your own thoughts.

I also wanted to mention some of the Batman-related sites I follow. There are brilliant and insightful people out there, and I could never hope to compete with them, but maybe my few thoughts can contribute a little something to the larger conversation. A few of my favourites are the official Daily DCU, The Daily Batman, and the surreal and beautiful Batman in Wonderland tumblr. David Uzumeri posts fantastic annotations of new issues at Comics Alliance, it’s lots of fun to read through his posts after reading the books to find out what I missed. If you know of any other sites/blogs I should be watching, let me know!

And that’s it for now. Next post will be my thoughts on Batman & Robin 16, which everyone knows by now ended on quite an exciting note. My favourite bits were actually more towards the middle, but we can talk about that later. One thing to note – I’m going to assume that you’ve read the comicbook before reading anything here, so my posts will contain spoilers. I am the night!
